Last Tuesday, July 5, the 15th Academic Senate of Fide, an activity that is held at the end of each academic year and that represents a magnificent opportunity to bring together all the professionals that make up our foundation in an act of an academic and social nature. As usual, after a few words of welcome from Carmen Hermida, General Director of Fide, the Cloister began with a speech by Cristina Jimenez, President of Fide. In this, our president made a recapitulation of the activities that Fide has developed during this academic year, and announced some changes that will mark the future of Fide, such as the change of the Board of Trustees, with the introduction of Jorge Padilla as a new member, the start of activities in Barcelona, as well as the intention to establish forums in Alicante and Malaga, the launch of new Work Spaces and the actions carried out to promote Fide and its professionals in the international arena. 1 / 11 Immediately after, Victoria Dal Lago, Academic Coordinator of Fide gave way to the two round tables in the afternoon.
In the first round table we had the opportunity to talk with Juan Ramón Caridad, Alvaro Lobato, Jorge Padilla y Maria Jose Gomez Yubero on the current economic situation and future forecasts. The second table brought together rest of the UK were adequately protected by the independence settlement agreed between the parties. One area of sensitivity would be defence. The terms of a defense pact and the future of the UK nuclear deterrent would affect NATO's defense of Europe, and NATO as well as the UK would expect some solidarity from Scotland as an aspiring NATO member. Nuclear deterrence is a cornerstone of NATO strategy. as the NATO Council put it in December 2020, NATO allies “are determined to ensure that NATO's nuclear deterrence remains Phone Number List safe, secure, and effective, and reject any attempt to delegitimize nuclear deterrence.” The more that UK politicians respond to SNP calls for Indyref2 with the mantra that now is not the time, the more they confirm the expectation that there will indeed be an Indyref2, and that a one-off bare majority vote for “yes” in that poll will guarantee independence.
It is time to move the goalposts, to ensure a more reliable mechanism for any further testing of Scottish opinion on independence, and to flag up the inescapable fact that the UK Government will only recognize an independent Scotland if the interests of the rest of the UK are respected. Andres Desantes (Paris), Teresa Rodriguez de las Heras (Rome), Javier Fernandez-Lasquetty (Madrid), who participated remotely, along with Ana Fernandez-Tresguerres to review the context and implications surrounding the concept of the metaverse and other virtual universes that seem to mark the future of our interaction in digital environments. Finally, having concluded the academic activities, we were able to enjoy an excellent cocktail served on the terrace of the third floor of COAM, current venue for the sessions of Fide in Madrid. As always, we want to thank all of our members for their participation and all the energy they put into making Fide continue to be the meeting place par excellence.
