This was no doubt about it the most competitive day we've had in NITRO daytime history as all three networks aggressively programmed their blocks with shows that belong in prime time.
There was also some history made as The Noon Show was not the most watched show in daytime as ICE launched the second season of Team ICE which follows the studio's Battle of the Network Stars sports team practice sessions. With the first BOTNS special right around the corner viewers were clearly ready to watch a show like this as it was the first weekday program this season to score over 20 million viewers. Tracy's 3 Girls and Molly in South Philly's special repeat offerings of their Saturday premieres did very well to close the block.
Tuesday was all about the debut of the most anticipated soap in NITRO history "Youthful Daydreamers" which started its daytime run this afternoon after scoring huge ratings the night before in prime time. With Youthful Daydreamers airing in one of the mid-to-late afternoon spots this could be NITRO's biggest soap going forward. One of the analysts said that Youthful Daydreamers could be NITRO's next big program representing this era of teens and young adults much like Beverly Hills, 90210 did back in the 90s or The O.C. back in the 2000s. Youthful Daydreamers easily set a record of 17.18 million viewers for a daytime soap. The question now will be where the soap settles in at b/c ICE's Daytime President Rebecca Herbst stated that she will have two more young-skewing soaps on the table in the future to create this new block of soaps. Analyst Todd Morgan stated what makes these breed of ICE soaps appealing is that they take place in real settings in real life settings so they are more than just teen soaps they're very relatable to people all around the world.
For ROD they had a very nice afternoon as the addition of "As the World Turns" has really helped improve the afternoon side of the soap lineup but their morning soap block needs some major help.
SBC was the first network to test original comedies in daytime as they started to run their rights of the Toronto's Friends franchise comedies that David Schwimmer and Matthew Perry brought over from ICE and moved to SBC with the help of the studio's Chairman Courteney Cox. Chicago's Friends turned in a very good rating but Toronto's Friends may have lost star power but the ratings hit almost 10 million viewers in the middle of the afternoon so this is good news going forward that SBC may option it to prime time and bring one of their struggling comedies to daytime. Look for a comedy like Pregnant Teen which can compete with that teen audience that ROD and ICE are trying to grab during the late part of the afternoons. ICE is going to start programming a block of comedies starting with Little Darlings next week in daytime.
AFTERNOON VARIETY WAR
Primetime really hit daytime right here as we got a huge 5pm hour showdown between SBC's Mario Idol Variety Hour and ROD's Justin & Romeo Variety Hour both of these shows were huge hits back in the 2012 reboot season and faced off for the first time this season unleashing their season premieres against each other and guess what they tied each other right at 10.20 million viewers. Both programs had solid lead-ins so they could only drop or grow on a positive or negative equal level. This could be a real good war to watch down the line.
