Eight Is Enough (1978) (ROD Sony Alliance)ROD wins the first Friday of the season and the 2nd night of the season as they have won both of their head-to-head division matches against QBC in the Federal Division easily and the same for ICE against SBC in the National Division. What made Friday special was that there was a huge soap battle going on between ROD and ICE where both network had programmed serial dramas against each other creating a Friday night soap war this fall. This could be one of the best ratings battles that we see this fall as both blocks provide strong programming in the drama genre. NITRO has always had a rich history of soaps airing on Fridays to successful numbers as it seems like the global audiences are in the moods for dramas over the weekend. We are seeing a strong theme of reboots of classic programs from the 20th century getting remade and brought back and that was the case again for ROD with their bringing back of the classic 70s comedy-drama Eight Is Enough which had a strong outing of 40 million viewers in its two-hour special premiere. With a new cast the show was able to perform strong. ROD had quietly cancelled Family Choices and Nanny Work to make room for the drama. Sheila Carter debut as the most watched program of the night growing out of EIE by 3 million viewers. Sheila Carter is looking really strong already out of the gate and a huge force on Fridays. Unfortunately Desire couldn't compete at 11pm. Bradleys vs. Van Horns was actually originally based off of Eight Is Enough and it was ironic that they had to go head-to-head with EIE in that 8pm slot that they lost but still provided strong numbers providing huge lead-in support for the rest of the ICE soaps as the All My Children reboot got a big spotlight season premiere in prime time before it stars a full season run in daytime on Monday afternoon. Vancouver Models grabbed more than 30 million viewers in late night hours as it was the only time that ICE was able to beat ROD head-to-head this evening as they were able to get Desire cancelled. Even though SBC finished in 3rd place they had a very good night as their two variety series kicking off the night did very well. Terri Shields made her SBC debut after spending the past 4 years with ICE with her twin sister Allison. She got traded to SBC on draft night and now she is working with her successful little sister Gabby who is SBC's top star right now at the moment. Their variety series cleared 30 million and Tammi Brooks & Debby Ryan weren't too far behind at 28 million viewers. The problems for SBC came afterwards as Terrortown got cancelled for dropping almost 20 million viewers behind Tammi & Debby. Michaels & Leary got to 17 as it had to grow a lot just to get a decent premiere performance so we'll see next week how M&L does with a better lead-in. Things perked back up to the 20s territory when Selena Gomez's Music Variety Hour debuted to stronger numbers providing good lead-in support for SBC Girls After Dark which had a very good retention rate. QBC had another solid night but a slow start to their evening as Breaking News and Pilot Season was able to get the ratings back up to a healthy position. The late night show with Bryan Cranston was out of the competitive loop. It's probably too early to tell if Green Light, 1st & Goal, and Cranston are trouble spots for them but QBC more than likely has room to be patient on Green Light and 1st & Goal for a couple of more weeks to see where it settles. One of the things we know about NITRO is that star power drives up ratings and QBC really needs a star on their network to host a Tonight Show like that as we see with Selena Gomez and SBC that show probably did well because Selena Gomez was in it not due to the show itself. It's something that QBC should work on this season promoting their actors. There's lots of room for all 4 networks to improve here on Friday nights going forward this season. Tomorrow is another huge star power night with nice match-ups between SBC and ICE in late night tomorrow. ROD has a pretty promising lineup as well so we could see the blockbuster numbers we saw on Thursday return on Saturday.

Another solid QBC night. We are a little disappointed with how our 8pm shows did, but they are good numbers for now and we are confident that they can grow.
