Studios this weekend are going home happy as they achieved making extra money outside of their networks. The box office is the best way to make a bunch of money and these studios proved that inside of the first box office weekend here on ON weekend. Its the summer and people wanted to go out and see these movies. Let's start with the front runner from those guys over there at UPN Studios in Toronto.
UPN Studios based motion picture distributor World Pictures had a blockbuster weekend with their 4th of July theme movie Theme Park starring two money making powerhouses Will Smith and Shia LaBeouf. Its obvious that people wanted to see these two foes in a movie. Will & Shia proved to be the perfect combination for this summer action blockbuster which was similar to most disaster action flicks of the 70s. The appeal of it being in 3D also brought an extra amount of people to the theaters this weekend to see Theme Park. World Pictures president Pat Devine says that, "This was the one movie that people wanted to go out and see and it proved to be far more superior to the rest." The promotion from the 4th of July Weekend party in Philly last weekend which was also televised to huge numbers on ROD may have given it the extra boost. Theme Park made $24,587 per theater for a grand total of $102 million and gave World Pictures' mother studio BlueLick Media Group/UPN Studios production companies 122,900 tokens which is the highest amount ever earned here on ON's short two week history. There's been rumors flying around from The American Reporter magazine that Will Smith is ready to ink a multi-year deal with UPN Studios.
Uniworks released their first movie release since acquiring the full rights to the High School Musical franchise just a couple of weeks ago. Uniworks proved to be successful in releasing the limited feature which drove fans to the theaters this weekend since they knew they only have two weeks to see it. High School Musical Triple Feature: Sing-Along Editions in 3D proved to be just as worthy as the last theatrical release High School Musical 3 making $18 million more than it. The TV series which debut just last week has been setting the TV world on fire throwing down its competition over its first two. Uniworks definitely know what their doing with the franchise and its proven to be a success. High School Music Triple Feature: Sing-Along Editions in 3D made $60 million in only 2,542 theaters which makes this a hit for them.
High School Musical may have overshadowed its competition by sneaking into 2nd place for a near photo finish with the highly budgeted The Psychologist starring veteran smart actor Anthony Hopkins, young up and comer in-house UPN Studios actress Bella Thorne, and Jay Mohr's wife Nikki Cox. The Psychologist has made this the best acting performance in the career of Nikki Cox so far including young 13-year old Bella Thorne. It was nearly as well done as Anthony Hopkins. World Pictures' reps said this was basically Silence of the Lambs all over again b/c its a horror flick that catches the audience eye with a brilliantly done one on one conversation between Anthony Hopkins and Bella Thorne. The controversial factor of the film had it bringing about the same buzz that The Exorcist had when it came out. Its one of the rare horror flicks to make over $40 million during opening weekend and opened with a horror genre record of $21 million on Friday Night. Unlike powerhouse Friday the 13th, its expected to have really strong legs with the good reputation and be the horror event of the summer and be a contender for a TOP 10 finish in the Yearlys. The Psychologist has one of the best third place finishes ever on record. Sick Films polling had 56% of the audience female and 62% between the ages of 18-34. World Pictures in total has taken home to the bank 185,300 to their production companies.
TSN also brought home their releases of When Jethro Met -------- and Prison Arrest: The Movie. Both movies were overshadowed by big boy competition at the top. The two entries were solid but they did not live up to the hype. Both movies were highly anticipated from their TV audience fanfare but this was not the right weekend for a release. Both movies covered their production budgets and made The -------- Productions a whole lot of money this weekend with a combined total of 76,755 tokens. TSN head executive Jethro made a smart decision in releasing both movies on the same weekend to make that amount of tokens. Both movies had solid dailies and that's something to be proud of. TSN and TSP will no doubt have their day in the sun.
Overall, this was a very blockbuster weekend and next weekend should be even more interested as announced action release Tough Competitors comes your way this Thursday to theaters.
